Educational Programme

Our academic programme includes Junior Kindergarten to grade 8. It is designed to train students in all the skills and knowledge they will require for a successful continuing education. We aim to meet all the educational goals of the Ontario Ministry of Education plus our additional goals in the area of Christian education.

In today’s schools, subjects are not always taught in narrowly defined areas, and several disciplines may flow together in a single unit. In the sections that follow, though, we describe our curriculum subject by subject, so that you can get a clear picture of what we teach.

Bible
Our statement of faith points out that we consider the Scriptures to be "our authority in all areas of life". In that light it is apparent that knowledge of what the Bible says and means is central for an educated mind. Texts and teaching strategies vary from grade to grade. We use Bible curriculum developed by Christian Schools International and other publishers as well as teacher-created materials.

Language Arts
The Language Arts programme is the academic heart of our curriculum. The primary Language Arts programme involves listening, speaking, reading and writing in the foundational skills which include phonics, spelling, grammar and creative writing. Language Arts continues with a sequential skill building programme that includes development of comprehension, vocabulary, inferential skills, word analysis, sentence structure and a critical appreciation of how man responds literarily in creation.

Mathematics
Our approach to teaching mathematics is fairly traditional. Concepts are introduced and taught in a sequential manner from grade to grade. Students learn new skills by making practical and logical applications of those skills which they have already learned. A textbook approach to math offers an excellent balance of basic skills, problem solving, games and practice.

French
We believe strongly in the value of acquiring a second language and is the responsibility of Canadians to learn French as a national language. French is taught from Kindergarten to grade eight by one teacher. In this francais-seulement environment, students sing, play games, and converse, building their communication skills.

Science
Science is taught as an independent subject from grades one to eight. Our objective is to help students explore the wonders of God’s world in a way that will prepare them for ongoing studies in science, while building patterns of Christian thinking about the natural world. We incorporate an experimental, hands-on approach.

Social Studies
Social Studies is an essential part of what we need to impart to our children about our world. We need to understand its people, its places, its environments, its past and its problems. In grades seven and eight the curriculum is defined into History and Geography.

Technology
Our school is committed to the goal of providing an effective training in computer literacy. We desire every student in the school, at every grade level, to be comfortable using a computer. Computers are used within subject areas as well as taught as a separate subject. The computer is used for publishing, developing technical skills for keyboarding, database creation, communication, researching and web designing.

Arts
The study of Visual Art enables children to recognize and explore special facets of creation, such as line, colour, shape, form, space and value. It also encourages then to discover their own creative talents.

Music
Frequent singing teaches children to use the musical instrument they were created with - their voices. Music appreciation is an integral part of the curriculum, from the simple enjoyment of singing traditional songs in the primary grades to the study of musical styles and composers in the junior and senior grades. Music theory is also taught and applied with the playing of recorders. Students participate in the creative production of a school wide musical.

Physical Education
We aim to instil in all students the commitment and capacity to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. The emphasis in the early grades focuses on the development of motor co-ordination and muscle control, on positive attitudes of sportsmanship and on initial sport skills. As the years progress, there is more of a focus on sport skills. In all grades we focus on leading our students to cultivate a healthy mind and body.
