As a new school year begins, I reflect on why I teach in a Christian school. The reasons are many, but allow me to share one aspect of the joy of teaching in a Christian school.
I can share my faith throughout the entire day. As the rays of sun shine through the trees on a particular morning, I can point students to a wonderful God who shines on us all day. As the colours of fall become evident, I can make students aware of the One who holds all nature in His hands. As we work on communicating with each other, I can emphasize the fact that God is always ready to communicate with us through His word, His creation, or through prayer. As we do math, I can teach how God created the order of numbers and how they remain consistent, just like Him. As we discover language, I can remind students that language is a gift from God and we are to use it to build each other up at all times.
In addition to sharing my faith, my faith is constantly being strengthened as I see faith develop in the children I teach. I am reminded they don't complicate faith by questions which cannot be answered. God loves them; they believe it and know it to be true.
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these”, were words Jesus spoke when the children were brought to Him. He loved children. Let us learn from His example and never stop marveling at what children have to offer.
